Thomas Transition Programme (TTP) Find Out More

The Student Talent Spotting Team offer programmes of activity aimed at raising the aspirations and achievements of gifted and talented young people. Our two key schemes are the Thomas Transition Programme (TTP) for year 11 students and Reach for Excellence (RFE) for students in year 12 and 13.

Our Talent Spotting programmes are designed to enhance students’ current and future studies through subject taster sessions and study skills sessions. In addition, students have the opportunity to attend workshops and information sessions in careers, finance and UCAS amongst others. Our workshops give students invaluable impartial guidance and advice when making the difficult decisions regarding what to study, where to study, how to finance their studies and how to make a good UCAS application. There is also an annual residential summer school for students in year 12.

The Reach for Excellence programme has been independently evaluated and the research found that students who participated in the scheme were twice as likely as similar students in the control (comparison) group to enter a research intensive university, with just under half (45%) of RFE students entering these universities, compared with one-fifth (21%) of those from the comparison group. RFE students were also more likely to enter higher education generally; 87% of RFE students gained a place at university compared with 65% of similar students in the control group.

A level success is very high in RFE students. Just under three quarters (72%) of A-level grades achieved by RFE students were As or Bs compared with just over half (55%) for students in the comparison group. 61% of RFE students achieved at least one A grade, compared with 38% of the control group.

Supporting young people who demonstrate the potential to access a selective university but who may not have considered entry to research intensive higher education is our fundamental aim. The Talent Spotting Team provide able young people with the practical knowledge and confidence to apply to research intensive universities such as The University of  Leeds.
